Aranock Online
by Askgar on Jun.14, 2010, under Gaming
Just a quick complaining session, I had a major nostalgia trip today after discovering Astonia V3 was still alive online so decided to track down some V2 servers (V2 was shut long ago but the source is now public).
I came across one called Aranock so I downloaded it, unzipped and then tried to play and I got… a black screen.
I used Ctrl-Alt-Del to get out and tried again with compatability settings, it is an old game after all, and I got… a black screen.
I had a look on the forums and all people suggest is either changing compat settings or running in a VM (overkill for some old MMO). I tried every compatability setting I could before I gave off and went to play Eve, feeling quite disapointed.
I’m sure I’ll have another bash at it soon but having to install XP in a VM JUST to play an old game is going too far for me.
The Taste of Blood

Well, Wednesday night started as a perfectly normal Eve night, we decided to do some wormhole exploring so off we went, took an hour or more to get organised then jumped into a wormhole which was quite quickly found.
We went around doing various sleeper sites, collecting a reasonable number of bits of nice salvage loot and every so often noticing a ship on the scanner, however it was just a probing ship and nothing else so we ignored it. After a few sites we decided to have a quick loot dump so we all warped to the wormhole (to group up), then a couple of people warped off while we waited there for them to get back. Then this happened…
http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=6757733
We were sat at the wormhole when suddenly we all noticed a ship just appear, most of us weren’t expecting it and didn’t really know what to do but after a quick (VERY quick), debate we decided to kill it. By the time this had happened and I’d locked the ship, it had been webbed and scrambled and generally prevented from moving and then blown up.
After this we picked through the loot and, well you can see what we found in the kill mail, essentially that one PvP battle and the dropped loot paid for ALL of our ships, and fittings, at LEAST twice over, probably more, I grabbed the BPO when I saw it and ran back to Dodixie to drop it off before anything could happen.
After this we were all quite amazed at our luck, we can only presume this person had seen us doing sites and owned the POS in this wormhole and thought he’d be able to sneak in, unluckily he didn’t bank on us having just regrouped at the wormhole and, essentially, ganking him.
Anyway, after that we did another site or 2 then went back, dropped off the loot again and called it a night, all quite pleased with our loot, although the morals of what we did could be considered wrong, this person had done nothing to us and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and we gave them no possibility of escape or negotiations, I didn’t see their pod after the kill however I presume it got away?
Finally, for anyone who noticed my tweet of “We win at eve”, yes it was related to this and yes, I was being ironic. My personal view of eve is that as long as I’m having fun I don’t care what happens in eve and I have no intention of trying to win it.
